While I was back in Melbourne over the Christmas/New Year period, I slowly started to plan our wedding. We've decided on January 2014 (2 years away - summer in Melbourne) so there really is no excuse for stress, panic or most importantly in Mr Porter's eyes: Bridezilla behaviour. My Aussie dad's favourite saying is "stress less" so I'm glad we've all agreed on that one!
As it gets closer, I will start to feature more of my ideas and inspiration. The big surprise to me initially is the cost - why do "wedding flowers" cost x 1000 times more than normal flowers? It's like a big secret society where no one really discusses the reality of your big day until you're in the wedding club! I clearly remember when my friend started to educate me on the cost of her wedding. Conversation went something like this: "Are you joking?", "You can't be serious", "Whaaaaat?!".
From choosing the ring (which believe me is a mindfield in itself) to saving costs on the dress, flowers and styling, I hope I can share my learnings with you in the coming months. Warning: It's going to be frank. NHG x
P.S You can see a sneak peak of my plans on my Pinterest here

So looking forward to your take on all these things De! Pretty sure we have similar tastes on this front (I want a 'normal' fashionable dress too, rather than a giant strapless meringue), so will be taking notes!

I was on a mission with my wedding to not actually say the word "wedding" when booking anything. I just said "party". I am sure I saved myself a fortune.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE PINTREST.
Hi NHG! I've just come back from Australia where I was married too. I couldn't get over the lunacy associated with the wedding industry. Prices of everything quadrupled whenever the 'w' - word was used.
ReplyDeleteWe ended up having a surprise wedding, just told guests to turn up to a Christmas party at a restaurant. It worked fabulously well. Full kudos to Mondo Organics at West End in Brisbane who were sympathetic to our plea to keep it low key.
I think it's pretty easy to get caught up in the hype associated with getting married and over look the big picture.
I'm sure you've seen this before, but A Practical Wedding (http://apracticalwedding.com/) is a fabulous blog, all about keeping the crazy at a minimum!
Oh wedding planning... we had an 18 month engagement, which was fabulously relaxing until there was an issue with our venue 3 mths out. Cue mad panic to secure somewhere new (and it worked out beautifully!).
ReplyDeleteGood luck with it, I look forward to reading about it!
My friend chose her wedding flowers on the day of her wedding! We had breakfast, wandered into a nearby florist and picked out some roses, which she arranged at home. I was bursting to tell everyone that it was her wedding day, and as the florist was ringing it up I did. There was a flash in her eyes, which I can only imagine meant "Sh*t - I could have charged her triple!"
ReplyDeleteMiss Tallulah has the right idea!
