If you love beauty YouTube videos like me, you will probably have come across 'Project X Pan' at some point. Basically, the aim of the project it to use up existing beauty products before purchasing more. I don't know about you, but I'm generally happy when I run out of something as it means I get to try new products such as my French Pharmacy products (this doesn't apply to basics such as foundation etc!).
Step one - Purge old/unwanted products
Step one - Purge old/unwanted products
I can't stand clutter so I started my beauty purge by going through my make-up and throwing out anything that I am never going to use. I accumulate a lot of products through work so often they are colours that I wouldn't normally wear, or I simply don't like the product, and down the sink it went. Before I threw out anything, I tried it one last time to make sure I really couldn't use it.
Step two - Shop your bathroom cupboard
Now that your cupboard is a little less cluttered, go through and pull out products that are half finished because they've been pushed to the back in favour of something else. You will be surprised to rediscover products you forgot you had!
Step three - Replace your products
Replace all the new-ish products that are currently in use with the products that are nearly out of date and/or half finished.
I'm currently working on finishing a facial moisturiser, shampoo and conditioner, a Nars Orgasm blusher and lip glosses (that probably should have been thrown out a long time ago). Instead of having about five lip glosses on my desk, I now only have one so I can focus on finishing it. I've also finished around 12 products (pictured below) simply by swapping them with the newer products I was previously using.
Step four - Sell/donate new products
While sorting out my cupboard I pulled out a pile of products that I've tried once or twice but aren't right for me. I found four products that I ended up selling on Ebay for £30. Most of these products were given to me so it was a bonus getting some cash for them.
I also donated a bag of products to the fab charity Give and Make Up. The charity provides products to women who are victims of domestic violence and have fled their homes, so they don't even have the basics that you and I take for granted. You can find out where to donate here.

Great post! I went through my bathroom cupboard a few months ago as my husband was complaining that he did not have enough room. Everything has either been used or given away, there is loads more space and we are both happier :)
ReplyDeleteI love this! A few months before I moved I realised just HOW many toiletries (and everything else) I had, so made a point of purging that which I never used and using up everything else before I bought any more. Although I always have a couple of each product on rotation now, I always try to apply this rule still.

This is a fantastic idea. Will definitely be doing something similar as the amount of toiletries I have is insane! x
ReplyDeleteI think the worst is all the stuff you get for free, either through work or through gifts from stores, that you accumulate thinking you'll try them out some day and never end up using. The charity you write about is a great idea; I need to see if there's an equivalent in New York.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, I'm always trying to finish products. Love Give and Make Up too, such a good idea.
